‘The impediment to action is the advancement of action’
The greatest investment one can give oneself is an investment into one’s own mind and character through the experience of education. This outcome is best achieved through the self reflection of one’s own experience in applying oneself to the many aspects of life and the transferable and soft skills that this instructs in a person; one lesson in one sphere of life provides wisdom applicable in many others, and it is about seeing the patterns and connection between these spheres that gives potency to the lesson.
This is best demonstrated through an exploration of manner. To perform universally under the many different stimuli of life one must expose oneself to these stimuli in the performance of said action; this sets us a paradox of sorts, as to perform under stress well one must learn to perform under stress, and the only way to do this is to put oneself in highly stressful situations and perform, repeatedly, until one has adapted to the stress of the stimuli.
This is in essence and practice simply exposure therapy, but it is the most practical method for dealing with modern day maladies such as general or situational anxiety. One must push one’s ability to handle stress by practicing actively being under stress and so expand the stimuli they are comfortable under. To do otherwise is to recede into oneself; you must constantly walk to the horizon of life and push the limits of your being in order to grow.
As a famous Stoic philosopher King once said, ’the impediment to action advances said action’, it is the measure of growth to overcome obstacles in pursuit of a worthy goal. This provides purpose, this provides direction and movement in life and so is vital to the idea of living a ‘good’ life.
